Should an 11-year old take whey protein powder?
My son is about 5’4 and weighs about 100 lbs. He plays several sports and would like to gain some muscle mass. I have taken powdered protein products before in combinations with using free weights with good results. How young is too young for the protein powder? The product label isn’t much help in figuring this out, but it seems pretty harmless.
First let me tell you this. My kids eat whey protein smoothies and shakes every day and the oldest is 5.
Whey protein is safe and is already in many of the things you are probably eating daily. Did u know it’s in Cheeze it crackers, candy bars, pop tarts, oreos and many other foods, including almost all dairy products like yogurt, milk, cheese etc. Baby food has whey protein, The protein in milk is 20% whey, so whey in its concentrated form should be perfectly fine at any age as long as you are not lactose intolerant. Next time you are at the store look at the label on some baby formula. Even that has whey protein in it. Start reading labels and you will see many foods that contain whey, and are safe at any age. Whey is a naturally occurring protein in dairy and it has a lot of health benefits even if you don’t workout.

Your son is very lucky to have a dad that is interested in his health and helping him achieve his goals. We need more parents like you.

If he only drinks one a day on days where he is playing a sport it will be ok. Too much protein will damage his kidneys.
If he eats meat everyday then you should NOT have him take protein because that would be too much.

Yeah it would be okay. Whey protein is very beneficial to the body, unlike creatine which can screw your liver. Now if your son is willing to try it, running 3 or 4 100m sprints immediately before doing any kind of weight lifting will release a significant amount of human growth hormone, and will substitute supplements like whey. It’s purely natural and is much cheaper then dropping $20+ on a tub of whey. This will make his legs more defined and powerful as well. Just a suggestion, the stuff works for me. Best of luck to the both of you in your training.

I took whey protein when i was 7. now im 15 year’s old and pretty damn strong haha. but you shouldn’t give him more than 2 scoops a day. too much will damage the liver. but that’s like 1 in a million chance that will happen. so to answer your question. its perfectly safe for an 11 year old to take whey protein.

He is still developing – he might be to young. You don’t want to overload him and give him kidney issues. What are you trying to achieve? Weight Gain? Muscle Mass? Even if he were to put on 10 pounds in muscle next month, he might grow 6 inches over the summer and negate the look that he achieved.
