<p>I make them for my kids without the protein powders (and sometimes with &#8211; depending on what they&#8217;re eating that day and their activities that day), though sometimes with milk or soy milk instead.  As for how many times a day, it really depends on which shake recipe you use and what the rest of your diet is like.  If you&#8217;ve got a good well balanced diet and you&#8217;re not training heavily, there isn&#8217;t really a &#8216;need&#8217; to have your food as a protein shake &#8211; its just sometimes convenient or sometimes a tasty treat instead of junk food.</p>

All I could find at the local store (without going to a health food store and spending a fortune) was whey protein powder.  Are these the same thing?  Can I interchange them for my diet?  Are there any drastic differences that I should be worried about?<br />
<br />Typically whey protein will be a higher concentration of protein and will have less carbs.  It will also be more complete in Amino Acid profile and is usually considered the most easy to digest.  I would suggest using the whey if you are OK with milk products.  If you can drink milk with no problems like allergies or intolerance then you will probably do well with whey protein.  </p>
<p>I hear your cost concerns.  Seems like so many of those &quot;health food stores&quot; are total rip offs!  Try www.buybulkwhey.com as they have some great prices on whey protein and their quality and flavors are good.  Also they have some smoothie recipes on their blog.</p>

<br />I love 2% milk with an all natural chemical free whey protein. I prefer the 2%, as it is not as watery:) You will be fine.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I weigh 230lbs, and am starting to take some whey protein drink to help built muscles and lose weight. How much should I consume daily?<br />
<br />Most people in the fitness community will tell you to consume between 1/2 to 1 gram of protein for each pound of lean body mass (your weight minus your fat) per day. I average about 3/4 and I train almost daily. If you&#8217;re body building (and it doesn&#8217;t sound like you are), some people take as much as 2g/lb per day.</p>
<p>For an after-workout shake, I&#8217;d recommend 25–40 grams. I usually take about 30 grams. My lean body mass is about 150 lbs.</p>
<p>By the way, I recommend you check out the Zone Diet, which I have found to be very effective at building muscle and losing fat when coupled with regular exercise.</p>

<br />5 hours unrefrigerated should not be a problem. I used to carry it in a &quot;Tupperware&quot; tumbler &#8211; pack it at 8 a.m. in the morning and drink it around 1 p.m. It was not refrigerated. It does taste good. Beyond 6 hours, I have my own doubts. It could get spoiled.</p>
